DESTINATION HIGHLIGHTS

MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK

Carefully enclosed by a series of mountains, Mikumi National Park is a lush oasis of vegetation which attracts elephants and buffalo herds down from the surrounding mountains and into the grasslands of the flood plains of the Mkata River. Mikumi's vegetation includes woodland, swamp and grassland with two water holes, Mkata and Chamgore. The park is contiguous with the better known Selous Game Reserve. The birdlife in Mikumi is colourful and diverse, due to the park's equally diverse landscape and vegetation, while the wildlife is abundant with giraffe, zebra, buffalo, hartebeest, hippos, Sable antelope, wildebeest, elephant, wild dogs, crocodiles and other interesting reptiles such as monitor lizards and pythons, often found sunning themselves on the rocks around the water holes.
