Murchison Falls

MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK

Murchison Falls is not only the largest park in Uganda but also one of the oldest (having been commissioned together with Queen Elizabeth National Park in 1952). With an area coverage of 3,840 sq. km, it lies on the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley, where the sweeping Bunyoro escarpment tumbles into the vast, palm-dotted plains. It is located a mere 360 Km away from Kampala – an estimated 5-hour drive. Three airstrips serve this park - for flights from Entebbe Airport and other parks.

The park has a varied landscape; the northern section of the park contains savanna and Borassus palms, acacia trees and riverine woodland while the south is dominated by woodland and forest patches. But it is the unforgettable sight of Murchison Falls that attract visitors to this park. The enormous 50m-wide Nile squeezes through a gorge estimated to be 6 – 8 metres wide and dramatically descends 43m towards Lake Albert, the ``Devil's Cauldron``, creating an inevitable mist and a trademark rainbow.

The park was a favourite with royalty. Notable visitors to the park include Winston Churchill, Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway and several British royals. Also, the 1951 film ``The African Queen`` starring Humphrey Bogart was filmed on Lake Albert and the Nile in Murchison Falls National Park.

It hosts 76 species of mammals such as elephants, Rothschild giraffes, lions, Ugandan kobs (antelope), waterbucks, buffaloes, hippos and crocodiles, not to mention some 451 bird species like Goliath heron, Egyptian geese, pelican, bee-eaters, kingfishers, hornbill, cormorant, saddle-bill stork and the rare Shoebill stork. Hippos, Nile crocodiles and aquatic birds are permanent residents along the river bank.

A scenic boat ride to the base of the waterfall provides an excellent game-viewing opportunity. To the intrepid traveller, white water rafting along the challenging currents would be a worthy adventure.

Other activities:

• Nature walks

• Fishing Nile Perch, Barbel, Electric Catfish or the Tiger fish.

• Hot air balloon
